What Is Openreach and How Does It Work?
Openreach is the company responsible for building and maintaining much of the UK’s broadband infrastructure. Rather than selling broadband directly to consumers, it operates the physical network that connects millions of homes and businesses across the country.
Many of the UK’s most popular broadband providers, including BT, Sky, TalkTalk, EE, Vodafone, Plusnet and Zen Internet, use the Openreach network to deliver their services. While the provider you choose manages your broadband package, billing and customer support, the underlying fibre infrastructure is often maintained by Openreach.

Openreach Full Fibre (FTTP) vs FTTC
Openreach operates the UK’s largest broadband network, but not every property is connected using the same technology. Depending on your address, you’ll typically have access to either Full Fibre (FTTP) or Fibre to the Cabinet (FTTC).
Full Fibre (FTTP) uses fibre optic cable all the way to your property, delivering faster speeds, lower latency and greater reliability. The Openreach network currently supports residential broadband packages of up to 1.8 Gbps, making it ideal for streaming, gaming, working from home and households with multiple connected devices.
FTTC, on the other hand, uses fibre only to the local street cabinet, with the final connection delivered over the existing copper telephone line. While FTTC can provide download speeds of up to 80 Mbps, actual performance depends on how far your property is from the cabinet.
Unlike Virgin Media or Community Fibre, Openreach doesn’t sell broadband directly. Instead, it provides wholesale access to its network, allowing providers such as BT, Sky, EE, Vodafone, TalkTalk, Plusnet and Zen Internet to offer broadband services over the same infrastructure. Although the network is shared, providers compete on price, contract length, customer service, routers and additional features.
